When I Grow Up

I was given the opportunity to speak with pre-teens and teenage girls between the ages of 9-14 about setting goals and implementing their dreams. During the event "When I Grow Up" that was hosted by Dirty 30 Entertainment the young ladies had discussion about personal hygiene, dating and future planning. I was tasked to help the girls with creating vision boards. I gave them quotes that I live by , advice on how I create my vision board, and went around the room to see if anybody would like to share their dreams.

Below is a list of rules I set in creating the vision boards as well as quotes I shared:

1. Create a Mission Statement for yourself.
2. Explain the difference between goals and dreams.
Goals and dreams are not much different. In the example above, the goals are more immediate (short-term) while the dreams are for the long-term.
3. List 20 Goals and 13 Dreams you want to achieve, do, watch, try and/or feel.
4. Categorize the goals: Spiritual, Educational, Mental, Emotional, Physical and Personal
5. Collect inspiring pictures, words and phrases. Any words that make you feel great or that describe how you will feel when the goal is accomplished.
6. Get glue or tape to make the pictures stick to the board. It’s a good idea to organize the order of the images before they are firmly set.
7. Label each item with a positive and action oriented phrase. For example, “I am happily exercising 3 to 5 times on week.” (With the images to include the days of the week he plans on working out. It’ll be a great reminder to go to the gym on those days.)
8. Review the vision board daily or every other day. Reviewing it regularly will keep the goals fresh in your mind. The positive words and pictures will keep you motivated to keep going. It’ll also develop a level of commitment.

Quotes:
“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.” ~ Gail Devers
“Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve”. – Napoleon Hill

“Create the life you were born to live” - Unknown

“Be yourself, everyone else is taken” – Unknown

Types of Goals:

Big-picture goals
- These goals are typically not achievable in one simple step – there is a journey to be taken to get there.

Milestone Goals – these are the series of goals that will take you to your destination.

Mini Goals – milestone goals may need to be broken down into bite-size chunks to make them more manageable.
